Working Remotely & Coworking

Bishkek has quietly become a hub on the Central Asian digital-nomad map: fast, cheap internet, a low cost of living, a convenient timezone for European teams, and mountains 30 minutes from the centre for the weekend.

This guide is for remote work for a company abroad. If you want a local job with a Kyrgyz employer, that needs a work permit — see Working in Kyrgyzstan: Local Jobs & Work Permits.

Internet

Home fibre (if you rent for a while): providers include Homeline (most recommended), Saima, and Megaline. Around 800–1,200 KGS/month for 100–600 Mbps, installed in 1–3 working days. Ask your landlord which provider is already wired to the building.

Mobile: 4G is excellent in Bishkek and drops out in the gorges. Beeline is the pick for remote workers because of VoWiFi — you can take calls and SMS over any Wi-Fi, worldwide, at home rates (details in Mobile Operators & Internet). Keep a mobile hotspot as backup.

Timezone

Bishkek is UTC+6 year-round (no daylight saving), so your schedule never shifts.

Their timeDifferenceExample
London (GMT/BST)+5–6 h9:00 London = 14:00–15:00 Bishkek
Berlin / Paris (CET/CEST)+4–5 h10:00 CET = 14:00–15:00 Bishkek

The overlap suits European hours: your workday ends in the Bishkek evening, leaving mornings and weekends for the outdoors.

Coworking spaces

  • ololo — the largest network (7+ locations), combining coworking with a café; day, week and month passes. Also has spaces in Osh and on Issyk-Kul (Cholpon-Ata) — you can work from the lake. A day pass is the easy option for your first week.
  • Open Place (Bokonbaeva 166) — a time-café: ~120 KGS/hour, no monthly commitment.
  • Open Space (Chuy 150a) — a classic coworking with fixed desks and meeting rooms.
  • Collab (Aaly Tokombaeva 9B) — desks from ~3,300 KGS/week.
  • Beeline free coworkings — free desks with Wi-Fi in a couple of libraries/universities (Mon–Fri, daytime); good for a one-off session.

Laptop-friendly cafés: Flask (a specialty coffee + coworking), Drippa, Clever Coffee, Zebra Coffee, and the ololo café zones. For a 2–4 hour session, order something every 90 minutes or so; it gets noisy at lunch (12:00–14:00).

Getting paid

  • SWIFT transfers work through local banks (KICB, Demir, MBank) — see Money & Payments for opening an account.
  • Crypto is a common route for freelancers with foreign clients, with a developed local exchange scene.

Visa reality for nomads

Kyrgyzstan has a “Digital Nomad” status under Cabinet Resolution No. 241 of 30 April 2025. It is free, you apply online at dnomad.e-gov.kg, and it lets you live in the country and work remotely without a work permit.

  • Who can apply: citizens of the USA, UK, Germany, Japan and South Korea (after the status is granted they get a DN visa through the e-Visa portal), and of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Russia (visa-free).
  • Fields: software development and support, IT systems, data processing, AI and robotics, games and esports, digital and media art, VR/AR, 3D, animation, graphic and multimedia design.
  • Stage 1 — 60 days: passport, photo, work or client contracts (last two years or upcoming), a bank statement showing at least $5,000 of contract income over a year, a bank balance of at least $3,000, and proof of your profession (diploma, course certificate or reference letter). The decision takes up to 7 working days. You get a personal ID number (PIN) automatically, and for the first 60 days you don’t need a local registration.
  • Stage 2 — 1 year: within 60 days of entering, you upload the same documents plus an HIV test, a medical check and proof that you’ve registered a local sole proprietorship or company. After that the status is renewed yearly, up to 10 years in total.
  • Family: spouses and children don’t get the status themselves; those from visa countries get an FF visa through the e-Visa portal.
  • If the status is cancelled, you have 15 days to leave.

Without the status you’re on the standard visa-free window (see Entry and Visas) or a visa or residence basis for a longer stay. Plan accordingly: visa runs no longer reset the clock.

Community & meeting people

Bishkek is an easy city to plug into:

  • IT Nomads Bishkek — the main community of IT expats and nomads; regular meetups, hackathons and weekend trips.
  • DevKG (dev.kg) — the local developer community (jobs, meetups).
  • Meeting Place (Toktogula 92) — a café/coworking hub that hosts conversation clubs, board games and talks — a fast way to meet people in your first days.
  • bishkek.events and @BishDvizh — what’s on: talks, standup, parties, film nights.
  • Chats KG — the directory of Telegram communities (hobbies, language exchange, running, hiking).

Some co-livings double as instant social hubs — see Renting Accommodation.
