Entry and Visas
Kyrgyzstan is one of the most open countries in Central Asia for travellers, but the rules changed at the start of 2026. Older guides that promise a flat “60 days visa-free for everyone” are now out of date — for many Western passports the allowance was cut in half.
Always confirm your own case before you fly. Visa rules change without much notice. The authoritative sources are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mfa.gov.kg) and the eVisa portal’s “Do I need a visa?” checker at evisa.e-gov.kg. The lists below reflect the 2026 rules (Cabinet Resolution No. 855, in force 31 December 2025) but are a guide, not a guarantee.
Find your purpose and stay in that section. A tourist stamp does not cover work or study.
| Purpose | Section |
|---|---|
| Holiday, visiting friends, a private stay | Tourist and private visit |
| Meetings, not a local job | Business visit |
| A job with a Kyrgyz employer | Work |
| Enrolling at a university | Study |
| Passing through | Transit |
🏖️ Tourist and private visit
This section is a tourist or private visit: a holiday, or staying with someone, with no local job and no enrolment. If your country is on the visa-free list, you need no visa, no invitation and no pre-approval. You arrive, show your passport, and an officer stamps you in. Within your permitted window you also do not need to register. Your passport must stay valid for the whole stay; keep the entry stamp until you leave.
The 2026 catch for Western passports: the allowance for ~55 countries is now up to 30 days within any 60-day period (it used to be 60). Two consequences:
- A single trip of up to 30 days needs nothing but your passport.
- “Visa runs” no longer work. Leaving and coming straight back does not reset the clock — the 30 days are counted across the whole rolling 60-day window. To stay longer you need a visa or a residence basis, not a border hop.
Longer stays for some passports — you get much more than 30 days. Citizens of Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine may stay up to 90 days within any 180; the Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE) up to 180 within 360; and Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan up to 60 within 120. All of these are still visa-free for this visit — just fly in with your passport. See the full breakdown below.

Not on this list? Use a tourist eVisa or visa on arrival, below.
Tourist eVisa
If your country is not on the list above, apply online before you fly. No embassy visit and no invitation. Citizens of essentially all countries and territories can apply.
- Check eligibility. Open evisa.e-gov.kg → Menu → Do I need a visa? Confirm your nationality is eVisa-eligible and pick tourist.
- Prepare the documents (digital):
- Passport bio-data page scan (valid at least 6 months, clear).
- A passport-style photo — 35×45 mm, white background, JPEG.
- Your travel dates and a Kyrgyzstan address (hotel/host).
- Fill the application — enter your name exactly as printed in your passport; a mismatch is the most common rejection.
- Pay by Visa or Mastercard. Rough fees (confirm the exact amount on the portal before paying): tourist 30-day ≈ $80, 60-day ≈ $90.
- Wait 3–5 working days. In peak season (May–September) allow up to 10 — apply at least a week and a half before departure.
- Print the approved eVisa (PDF) and carry it. It is valid at Manas (Bishkek) and Osh airports and at all land borders; you will be asked for it on entry.
Use only the official portal
evisa.e-gov.kg. Look-alike commercial sites charge a large mark-up for the same government eVisa.
The same portal also issues a business eVisa and a transit eVisa. The steps are the same; you pick a different type.
Visa on arrival
A few nationalities can get a tourist visa stamped at Manas International Airport (Bishkek) on landing — no online application:
- Indonesia, Philippines, South Africa, Venezuela — up to 1 month.
- Holders of a GCC or Brunei residence permit (any nationality) — up to 1 month, tourist purpose.
- Iran — tourist, and also a business visit. See Business visit.
Bring your passport, a photo, the fee in USD cash, and your onward/return details. If you are unsure whether you qualify, get an eVisa instead — it is the safer bet, and visa-on-arrival is not available to the general public.
Longer than the visa-free window
A private or family visit past that window needs a consular visa. A citizen or resident of Kyrgyzstan applies for visa support through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; you receive a reference number. Then apply at the nearest Kyrgyz embassy or consulate with your passport, the form, photos, that reference, and the invitation. Pay the consular fee there — processing time varies by mission. After arrival you must register (see below).
💼 Business visit
Meetings, negotiations, a conference. This is not a job with a Kyrgyz employer — for that, see Work.
Visa-free entry uses the same countries and the same number of days as a tourist visit. No invitation for that entry, and no invitation for a standard business eVisa.
If your country is not visa-free, apply on evisa.e-gov.kg and pick business. Documents, timing and the printout are the same as for the tourist eVisa. Iran can also use the simplified visa at Manas for a business visit, not only tourism.
A consular business visa is the embassy route when the eVisa does not cover the trip. The host organisation applies for visa support, then you file at a Kyrgyz embassy with the reference and proof of the trip.
👷 Work
A local job is not covered by a tourist or business stamp. There is no separate work visa-free list for Europe or the Americas.
- EAEU only — Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia. No Kyrgyz work permit. You still need a PIN and registration.
- Every other citizenship, including all EU states, the UK, the US, Canada and Mexico. The employer files a Single Permit. You cannot start work on a tourist stamp.
How to file the permit, the quota and the fees are in Working in Kyrgyzstan. If your nationality is not visa-free for entry, you still enter on the visa your citizenship requires; the Single Permit is the work document on top of that.
🎓 Study
The tourist lists do not cover enrolment. The university sponsors a study visa: the consular route, or the study type on evisa.e-gov.kg if the checker offers it for your citizenship. You apply with the admission letter. After arrival you register.
🚌 Transit
On a visa-free passport you can pass through within that passport’s tourist stay. If you are not visa-free, apply for a transit eVisa on the same portal (about 5 days, roughly $55 — confirm the fee before paying). The steps match the tourist eVisa; pick transit.
🧾 Registration
Registration (migration accounting) is separate from your visa and causes the most confusion, so keep it simple:
- Short visa-free stay: if you are visa-free and stay within your window (30 days for most Western passports), you generally do not need to register.
- Staying longer / on a visa: you must register at a Public Service Centre (PSC / ЦОН) before the deadline in Appendix 2 to Cabinet resolution No. 600 of 4 September 2026. For most Western passports that deadline is 30 calendar days, not 5 working days. The owner of the property where you are staying files it.
- Hotels usually handle it. Most hotels and licensed guesthouses register foreign guests automatically at check-in. If you specifically need proof of registration (e.g. to open a bank account), ask the property before booking whether they issue a registration slip for foreigners — many small guesthouses do not.
More on finding a place that registers you — see Renting Accommodation.
✅ First steps after arrival
The only truly time-sensitive tasks:
| # | Task | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SIM card | Day 1, at the airport | Bought on your passport at official operator desks (Beeline, O!, Mega) |
| 2 | Registration | Within your deadline (see above) | Only if staying beyond your visa-free window |
| 3 | Cash / card | Day 1–2 | ATMs are everywhere; som (KGS) is the only accepted currency for daily spending |
Kyrgyzstan is largely a cash-and-card country — carry some som for taxis, bazaars and mountain villages, where cards are not accepted.
